When Samuels received the assignment of retrieving the recovered flight recorder of the USCSS Nostromo, his diligence uncovered that Amanda Ripley was working in the region of space where her mother's ship vanished. Reasoning that Amanda was still searching for her mother, Samuels contacted Amanda personally, offering her a place aboard The Torrens on the mission to Sevastopol Station and the chance to finally find closure.
